49 CFR § 192.283 - Plastic pipe:Qualifying joining

Before any written procedure established under § 192.273 (b) is used for making plastic pipe joints by a heat fusion, solvent cement, or adhesive method, the procedure must be qualified by subjecting specimen joints that are made according to the procedure to the following tests, as applicable:(i) In the case of thermoplastic pipe, based on the pipe material, the Sustained Pressure Test or the Minimum ASTM F3507 - 21 Standard Practice for Butt-Fusion Joining 5.1 The procedures described in Section 8 are intended for butt-fusion joining of CX-PE pipe and tubing, using suitable equipment and appropriate environmental control procedures. Appropriate controls are established on the butt-fusion joining process to ensure that the pipe is suitable for joining, that the operator is properly trained, that adequate apparatus and procedures are used, and that the process

ASTM F3507-21 - Standard Practice for Butt-Fusion Joining

1.1 This practice describes procedures for making butt fusion joints with crosslinkable polyethylene (CX-PE) pipe and tubing 2 which is less than 30 % crosslinked at the time of joining. This practice shall not be applied to crosslinked products, that is PEX pipe or tubing or to CX-PE after commissioning 3 (commissioning transitions CX-PE pipe into crosslinked pipe). Before welding it is important to confirm that all components have adequate nominal pressure rating for the operating conditions and the PE Standard Practice for Heat Fusion Joining of Polyethylene 3.1 The principle of heat fusion joining of polyethylene(PE) pipe is to heat two prepared surfaces to a designatedtemperature, then fuse them together by application of asufficient force. This force causes the melted materials to owand mix, thereby resulting in fusion. Methods of joining polyethylene and PE100 pipesMeaning of Electrofusion Electrofusion is a simple method of joining PE pipes in circumstances where butt fusion is not practicable, such as where valves, elbows, and tees must be added. Prefabricated fittings are used, incorporating an electrical heating coil which melts the plastic of both the fitting and the pipe, causing them to fuse together. How does electrofusion work The characteristics of the fitting to be welded, such as the fusion time, are registered via a barcode on the fitting.
